HARRISBURG -- A community wellness group says it is committed to helping local food pantries, and has been delivering freezers and refrigerators across the region this week.
Aetna Better Health of Illinois, which also provides Medicaid services, wants to ensure food pantries in the region can store more food for those they serve, said Jeffrey Isbell.
"This is part of our commitment to making sure food pantries have the resources they need," Isbell said.
On Wednesday, Isbell met with state Sen. Dale Fowler at Heaven's Kitchen in Harrisburg to deliver one of the brand-new stainless steel units.
"On behalf of Heaven's Kitchen, we greatly appreciate the donation," Fowler said. "This will allow us to continue to serve the community well."
Fowler also said Heaven's Kitchen on Tuesday, June 15, will begin an outreach food program in Eldorado. In conjunction with the office of Dr. Matt Buckman, at least 50 prepared meals will be brought from the Harrisburg location to Eldorado to serve people there.
Isbell, the Aetna Better Health of Illinois representative, said his company's donations are providing 54 refrigerator and freezer units to 31 food pantries in southern Illinois.
He said the total value of the donated units is $138,000.
