Paul Schimpf, the Republican candidate for Illinois governor from southern Illinois, has been joined in his campaign by McHenry County Board Vice Chairwoman Carolyn Schofield of Crystal Lake as his lieutenant governor and running mate.

Schofield is a member of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and is a former member of the Crystal Lake City Council and the Crystal Lake Planning & Zoning Commission.

In 2020 she ran in the Republican primary for House District 66 and lost to the incumbent, Allen Skillicorn.

"I am honored and excited to be running with Paul as his lieutenant governor candidate," Schofield said in a statement sent out by the campaign.

"As a parent, I can no longer sit back and watch Illinois families face corruption in our government and danger on our streets. I'm running because Paul and I can make a difference."

Other GOP candidates running in the gubernatorial primary this coming June are: Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin; businessman Gary Rabine of McHenry County; state Sen. Darren Bailey of Xenia and venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan of Petersburg.

In the statement, Schimpf and Schofield pledge to clean up corruption in Illinois, "keep our veterans, families and communities safe, and grow our economy for working families.

"Their shared vision represents a sharp contrast from the failed policies of the Pritzker Administration, which has punished everyday Illinoisans with unaffordable taxes, surging crime, and corruption," the statement says.

"In the wake of J.B. Pritzker's failures, the state needs leaders who will take responsibility, hold themselves and others accountable, and stand up to special interests. Paul Schimpf and Carolyn Schofield will provide the leadership Illinoisans deserve. They will provide common-sense conservative leadership families can trust to fix Illinois."

Schimpf said Schofield is the "ideal" choice for his ticket because their priorities align. "We will continue to push our Parent's Bill of Rights to give back to parents the autonomy and respect that they never should have lost in the first place," Schimpf said.

Schimpf is the former state Senator in the 58th District, is a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also served as the chief American attorney adviser to Iraqi prosecutors in the trial of Saddam Hussein. Paul and his family live in rural Monroe County.
