Raymond Henry Dettmer of Chester

Raymond Henry Dettmer, 89, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 7:55 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

He was born to the late Herman and Louise (nee Wolff) Dettmer on April 12, 1932 in Welge, Illinois.

Raymond married Janice Leaders on Aug. 5, 1960 at Peace Lutheran Church in Chester; she survives.

He was retired from the bindery department at Spartan Printing after working there 37 years.

Raymond was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post #3553 in Chester. Raymond enjoyed traveling and loved cars and working in his yard.

He served in the Army during the Korean War conflict in the 7th Division, 32nd Infantry, K Company as a rifleman and later as a Company Clerk.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Dettmer of Chester; a daughter, Gina (Shawn) Straight of Chester; five grandchildren, Aaron (Jaimie) Dettmer, Jason (Sela) Dettmer, Ashley (Eddie) Rodriguez, Kacie Straight and Taylor (Devin) Davis; three great-granddaughters, Sophia, Liana, Emilia, and one great-granddaughter, Emmie Louise, due in October; two sisters-in-law, Judy McLeod and Joanie (David) Meyer; and many nieces and nephews.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and one son, John Dettmer.

The funeral service for Raymond Henry Dettmer will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester. The Rev. Justin Massey will officiate. Interment will follow in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Chester.

Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester.

Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church and the St. John Lutheran Cemetery Fund.
