Betty Jean Prowell, age 85, of Elkville, passed away at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021 at her home in Elkville, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born in Carbondale on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1935, the daughter of Thomas and Eulah "Dee" (Cross) Bailey. She married William Joseph Prowell in Kentucky in 1952. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1971.
Betty knew the value of working hard. She worked at the shoe factory in Murphysboro as well as the Gilster-Mary Lee plant. Even more so, Betty knew the value of a loving family. She cherished her family and time spent with them.
Survivors include her four children, daughter Pamela Jean Vaughn of Elkville, son William E. (Debra) Prowell of Marion, son Joseph Dean (Carla) Prowell of Ava and daughter Claudia Sue Rheinecker of DeSoto; seven grandchildren, Tina Marie Braden, Thomas A. Vaughn, Melissa Denise Prowell, William Joseph Prowell, Jennifer Hagene, Joseph Dean Prowell Jr. and Sarah Manus; several great-grandchildren; and brothers Tom Bailey of DeSoto and Claude Bailey of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Nema Reese and Blanche Long; and her precious great-great grandson, Callen Michael Prowell.
As per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Memorial services to celebrate Betty's life will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 at Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home, 11 S. Hickory St., Du Quoin). A time of visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 at Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
