Hugh McCabe Jr., 95, of Junction, Illinois, formerly of Stonefort and Tinley Park, Illinois, died at 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, officiated by Josh Koerner and the Rev. Keith Bunfill. Visitation will be held on Friday prior to the service, starting after 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Bolton-Trammell Cemetery with military rites by the Carrier Mills American Legion, Harrisburg American Legion and the Scott Air Force Base Ritual Team.

Memorials may be made to Bolton-Trammell Cemetery or Stonefort Missionary Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Hugh was born on Sept. 17, 1926, in Stonefort, to the late Hugh Francis and Iva Olive (Felty) McCabe.

He married the former Nellie Eulene Bennett on Aug. 24, 1956 and she preceded him in death, on April 12, 2008.

Hugh was a retired educator, school administrator and counselor. He received three Master's degrees and taught school all the way from a one-room school in Stonefort to a university in the Chicago suburbs -- as well as helping open Thornridge High School in Dolton in 1960, and Thornwood High School in South Holland in 1971.

Hugh was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and he served in World War II.

In Tinley Park, he was a member of the Tinley Park Baptist Church and in Stonefort he attended the Stonefort Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by two children, Lucinda (Ron) Koerner of Littleton, Colorado and Bennett Hugh McCabe of Chicago; two grandchildren, Josh (Lillian) Koerner of Coldwater, Michigan, and Caitlyn Koerner of Littleton, Colorado; a brother, Patrick (Alice) McCabe of Murrieta, California; and a sister, Margaret Mossman of Equality, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie McCabe; three brothers, Robert McCabe, Donald McCabe and William McCabe; and a sister, Anne Marie Hinton.
