Elizabeth 'Betty' Jones of Benton

Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Jones, 90, of Benton, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday morning, Feb. 23, 2022, at her son's home.

Betty was born in Benton, Illinois on May 26, 1931, the daughter of the late John and Lula May (Harben) Tucker of Benton.

She married Richard L. Jones on Oct. 4, 1952, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2002.

One sister, Virginia Noel of Benton, preceded her in death, and she is survived by two siblings, Dorothy Kays of Eugene, Oregon and John Tucker of Saxeville, Wisconsin.

Betty was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Benton and served many years on the board of deacons, in the Lucy Helm women's group, and as church secretary.

She had a great love for all things in nature, especially flowers and birds. She loved to keep her mind young by writing short stories, working crossword puzzles, and even took courses at Rend Lake College while in her 70s and 80s.

Betty worked for Country Companies Insurance as an agent until her retirement; she was church secretary, and worked part-time at the State Bank of Whittington from which she retired at the age of 85.

Betty is survived by her three children, son Michael L. (Christine) Jones of Southaven, Mississippi, and daughters Teresa L. Hansen of Spring Valley, Illinois and Cydney (Mark) Bretsch of Peoria, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Shane, Jacy, Jaime, Tyler, Shaina, Nina, Tawney and Gaige; and she was blessed with nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 5 at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Rev. Jim Jenkel officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
