Gilbert Lee Stockton of Du Quoin

Gilbert Lee Stockton, 94, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:32 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at the VA Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.

Gilbert had been a salesman for the Cargill Company and he also sold insurance for 10 years. He was a Christian and had attended Liberty Church in Du Quoin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Gilbert was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Sesser, Illinois, the son of Noble H. and Gracie (Galloway) Stockton.

He married Jean Montgomery on Oct. 17, 1949 in Henderson, Kentucky, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2018.

He is survived by one son, Chris (Shelley) Stockton of Du Quoin; one daughter, Karen (Larry) Britton of Tamaroa; four grandchildren, Michael (Keri) Brown of Imperial, Missouri, Andrea (Jeremy) Helmer of Du Quoin, Shelby (Raymond) Loyd of Du Quoin and Autumn (Zachary) Cavitt of Du Quoin; and six great-grandchildren, Kylie Brown, Kerrigan Brown, Kristen Brown, Ryan Helmer, Amelia Helmer and Claire Helmer.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sons, Bruce Stockton and Stephen Stockton; and one brother, Lloyd Stockton.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Gary Kelly officiating. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Sesser, Illinois, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.
