Du Quoin Performer Advances to Finals at the Marion Civic Center
A 16-year-old Du Quoin High School singer and guitarist will perform on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Marion Civic Center as a finalist in the prestigious Southern Star talent competition.
Chandra has always been a gifted vocalist and added to her skills a few years ago by picking up a guitar.
Chandra auditioned for the Southern Star Productions contest held Saturday, Aug. 11 at Rent One Park in Marion.
Chandra is the daughter of Denise Gilliam and Danny Gilliam.
Southern Star is the largest and most entertaining singing contest in Southern Illinois.
Southern Star Productions co-founders Jim Gentile and Mike Ben Avi believe that people in Southern Illinois don't always have the same opportunities that people in larger Metropolitan areas would have and believe there is talent right here in Southern Illinois.
Chandra is among 20 of the area's most talented singers who were advanced to the finals to be held Saturday at the Marion Civic Center. The competition will begin at 7 p.m. This will be a showcase of all ages and styles of singers.
First place winner will receive $500 and make a special appearance at the Shawnee Hills Music Jamboree. and first runner-up will receive $300 with the third place winner receiving $200.
The audience will vote for the fourth place winner. All four top finalists will also receive a free recording session at 326 Studios in Anna, owned by veteran Nashville musician Steve Hornbeak. He has toured the past 23 years with artists such as Richard Marx, John Michael Montgomery, Faith Hill and Lee Greenwood and currently plays keyboard and does background vocals for CMT's "Next Superstar."
