Trash haulers may have to pay $50 per truck licensing fee
Solid Waste Coordinator Becky Tracy told the Perry County Board Thursday that she and the State's Attorney's office have been working on a waste management ordinance which she hopes the board will consider soon.
The ordinance would require all trucks that pick up waste in Perry County or use the landfill six or more times per year be assessed an annual $50 licensing fee.
Funds collected from the license stickers would be used to expand the county's recycling program and set up a hazardous household waste collection day in Perry County.
Tracy said the recycling program at the government building collects two bins worth of paper, plastic and glass recyclables per week. The first purchase she would make is another collection bin.
In years past, residents of Perry County have been able to take household hazardous waste to Jackson County on their collection days. Due to the increased popularity of the Jackson County program, their collection days have been limited to Jackson County residents only.
The ordinance would also set guidelines for curbside recycling. Tracy said that at this time, it is cost prohibitive for local waste haulers to offer curbside recycling.
In other business, the board:
• passed a resolution approving an addendum to the collective bargaining agreement with the Laborer's Local 773 which represents the clerical staff in the government building and the State's Attorneys office. The addendum agrees to pay back wages the last contract's expiration on Dec. 1, 2011 to Nov. 30, 2013. The staff will receive $.37 per hour for the first year and 1.7 percent for the second year, based on the Consumer Price Index. The board also passed resolutions amending the current budget to allow for the payments and moving the next meeting date from Oct. 3 to Oct. 4 to allow 15 days of public inspection before passing the amended budget. The total back pay in all six offices is just under $70,000.
• approved special use permits for new mobile homes to be placed by Ralph Remus on Sandpiper Road, D. Clay Jenkel on Apple Road and Donald Fisher at Division and North Streets in Sunfield, pending approval by the zoning board.
• passed a resolution approving raffle licenses for Jason Houghland/VHL benefit, St. Mary Magdalen Church, CCSD #204 Community Club and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 930.
• accepted the resignation of Greg Kellerman from the Pinckneyville Rural Fire Protection District.
