Du Quoin Ministerial Alliance fund that helps Weekend Warriors program is down to $240
Every week the churches of Du Quoin buy and sack enough weekend food for 140 Dist. 300 children, many of whom would have very little otherwise. The program is called Weekend Warriors.
The churches shoulder much of the work, but the Du Quoin Ministerial helps the churches financially when the program needs it. Last year, Weekend Warriors also purchased 140 $20 holiday gift cards to McDonald's that went home in each sack.
The cost is $2,800 with churches paying half and the ministerial alliance paying half ($1,400 each). With only $240 in the alliance's bank account those gift cards may not be going home with students, according to Donna Blythe, president of the Du Quoin Ministerial Alliance and pastor of the Sunfield United Methodist Church.
"All of our smaller programs add up," Rev. Blythe said. "Weekend Warriors is expensive." She adds, "I continue to hear stories about how great this program is and she said one story came from the schools about a child going through a trash can for food."
