Bill Asbury 2013 Outstanding Citizen of Year

Mr. Bill Asbury, founder of the annual January indoor girls' softball tournament to benefit Special Olympics of Southern Illinois on Tuesday was named recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Citizen of the Year award. The decision came during a meeting of the Du Quoin chamber's board of directors. Since its inception four years ago the benefit indoor tournament has raised $192,000 with the goal of raising $100,000 in the January 2014 tournament. The annual banquet to honor him will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Elks lodge. Asbury's selfless initiative brings 28 teams from across the midwest each year. Nearly 300 teams seek acceptance into the three-day event.
