Assistant Perry County State's Attorney David Searby said Thursday Illinois' concealed carry gun law is a work in progress, with revisions and court tests likely.

Some of the highlights include the fact that some insurers may not allow guns on premises as a matter of liability. He said employers can ban employees from carrying concealed weapons in the workplace. Day cares as a business cannot allow guns on the premises, but a home-based day care may be a different issue.

He explained a parking lot exemption that gives a person enough time to take a concealed weapon off their person and lock it in the trunk of their car before entering business.

He said the courts will have to decide the issue of what constitutes a "concealed" weapon versus a "mostly concealed" weapon.

Every issue involving a gun on the premises of an establishment that sells both food and alcohol may have to be decided at the discretion of a law enforcement officer or in court on each individual case.

At the conclusion of the meeting Sheriff Keith Kellerman made state police-compliant window stickers for businesses that do not plan to allow concealed weapons in their business available to those attending.
