Street Machine Nationals by the numbers
Du Quoin Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer said he sent six officers home early on Saturday after it became apparent they were not needed.
"We cut out four cars and sent six people home," he continued.
He said the worst of the weekend incidents involved a girl who became intoxicated, got belligerent with police and later struck or kicked a nurse at Marshall Browning Hospital.
Otherwise, he said, "One of our main concerns was people sitting out on the sidewalks with small children watching the cars."
Parents kept watch over their children fairly well, he said.
Ellermeyer said only a handful of citations were issued.
Perry County Sheriff Keith Kellerman echoed Ellermeyer's sentiment. "I think we have to welcome them to Du Quoin and then let them know we are here," he said.
He said the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds is great venue and the area should support the fair's hosting of events year around.
