Du Quoin General Cable staff donates five truckloads of food and $725 to food pantry
Through its high performance utility cable making, the General Cable Co. plant in Du Quoin powers the world.
On Thursday, the generous food and financial contributions of their employees made Christmas brighter for dozens of Du Quoin-area families.
Doris Rottschalk of the Du Quoin Food Pantry explains:
"Two weeks ago General Cable employee Steve Creighton heard that the Du Quoin Food Pantry served over 500 families and had only eight turkeys that would be raffled for Christmas; he then asked his coworkers to "step up" and help," she said.
"In two weeks the 200 General Cable workers donated over 4000 items of canned goods, cereal and bags of potatoes," she said.
"Not only did they donate, the employees loaded five of their trucks and helped deliver them to the food pantry in the snow on Thursday," she said.
"As the trucks were loaded and ready to caravan to the pantry, checks totaling $725 were added to their generous contribution," Mrs. Rottschalk said.
"This is amazing to see what one company can do for a community." Says volunteer Rottschalk, "When we approached the building's entrance, we saw 12 principles posted that the company strives to achieve. I could add another for them…..generosity and social justice."
