WEEKEND: 3 Things to Do

ROPE DEMONSTRATION

On May 14, Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher will host another presentation in the Art de Vivre series.

These events look at the skills - the "art of life" - needed to survive on the 18th century Illinois frontier.

A vital set of skills back then was making rope and being able to splice it together and tie secure knots.

Jeremy Volkmar will demonstrate how ropes were made by twisting twine. Nick Kuntz will cover the art of splicing rope and tying knots appropriate to any situation.

A third volunteer, Toni Hancock, will explain the lucet, a tool used in cord making.

The free workshop takes place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., with an hour break at noon.
