WEEKEND: 3 Things to Do

PAST LIVE SERIES

On May 21 and 22, the Fort de Chartres' "Past Lives" series returns.

It presents volunteers staying at the fort and living as residents did nearly 300 years ago. Visitors get to watch and ask questions as they cook meals, play games, fire and clean their muskets and more.

In this case, it will focus on a French marine and his wife. When the fort was under French control, soldiers would have lived with their families in the town of Nouvelle Chartres, next to the fort.

The troops drilled at the fort and served as protection if it was ever attacked.

Also on May 21, visitors can explore the fort's kitchen garden - its "jardin potager." From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will explain its vital role in life at the fort, offer samples of its bounty and provide free seeds for heirloom plants.

Plants and seedlings will be available for a small donation.
