District 95 hires Pavelonis as director of curriculum, instruction
The Carbondale Elementary School District 95 board voted last week to hire Janice Pavelonis as director of curriculum and instruction, effective July 1.
Incoming Superintendent Daniel Booth introduced her to the crowd at the regular monthly meeting last week.
"Ms. Pavelonis comes to us from the regional office," he said. "At the top of our list of priorities is a strong curriculum backed by the best practices in the classroom"
Pavelonis is the director of professional learning at the Regional Office of Education No. 30 in Murphysboro.
The board voted unanimously to hire Pavelonis.
Board makes personnel changes
Board members voted to release Misha Davis for cause as a student supervisor aide at Carbondale Middle School and Angela Thomas-Frank for cause as an EOC aide at Parrish School.
The board accepted the resignation of Corey Cawthon, student supervisor aide; Christine Young as a reading recovery teacher at Parris School; Megan Minnis, English as a Second Language teacher at Lewis School; and Juana Duran Charicata as an art teacher.
The board approved the notification from Alfred McGowan of his intent to retire at the end of the 2021-22 school year, and from Karen Pfeifer of her intent to retire at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
The board approved the following temporary summer workers: painters Marquita Bailey, Tiffany Nelson, Rebecca Schienker-Korb and Dre-Shaun Payne; lawn-care workers Brent Jackson and Heath Laughard; central office secretarial workers Leatreasa Lilly-Madison and Patsy Rogers; and Carter Morehead, high school worker.
The board hired Justin Lowery as a substitute cook.
District to send disruptive students to COPE program
The District 95 board voted to approve an intergovernmental agreement between COPE/Safe Schools Program and the district.
The COPE/Safe Schools program is an extension of regular school for students that meet the criteria as "disruptive students."
The district will be responsible for student transportation, pay a fee of $12 per day of enrollment and allow students to re-enter the regular education environment with credits/grades earned when the COPE/Safe School Program is successfully completed.
The board approved the agreement with a unanimous roll-call vote.
District to send students at academic risk to SOAR
The District 95 board voted to approve an intergovernmental agreement between SOAR Alternative Educational Program and the district.
The SOAR Alternative Educational Program is an extension of regular school for students that meet the criteria for students at risk of academic failure.
The district will be responsible for student transportation and allow the student to re-enter the regular educational environment with credits/grades earned when the Project SOAR Alternative Education Program is successfully completed.
The board approved the agreement with a unanimous roll-call vote.
