Amazing Race around Randolph County takes place Saturday

A popular type of reality television will play out in Randolph County on Saturday, as the county’s Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities class is having “The Amazing Race around Randolph County.”

The race, which is a fundraiser for the CEO class, is inspired by “The Amazing Race,” the long-running CBS game show that follows teams of contestants around the world as they compete unique tasks for the chance at the grand prize of $1 million.

Teams also take home smaller prizes by winning each “leg” of the race, while teams that finish last are progressively eliminated.

Randolph County’s version features stops at the Sparta Fairgrounds, Steeleville Village Hall, Cohen Home and Cedar Hill Farms in Red Bud. There are also two bonus stops.

“The kids all had to come up with one or two ideas that would be fun, people around the county could get involved in and involve the whole county,” said April Nail, the class’s instructor. “This way, it gives each of the towns some exposure.”

Similar to the TV show, teams will have to complete “tasks” at each location in order to earn points that will make up their final score. The race will start at 1 p.m. at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex’s Seasons Event Center.

In the event of bad weather, mini-stops will be located within the event center.

Registrations are still being taken, with the same-day registration starting at noon for a fee at $35 per individual and $120 for a team of four.

Prizes will be given to the top three teams, with music and a fried chicken dinner provided by the Seasons Event Center starting at 5:30 p.m.

All participants will be required to sign a liability form during packet pickup. Nail didn’t want to spoil the surprise about what kind of tasks teams will be asked to perform, and noted that the route - which can be taken by vehicle - each team takes to the location will be up to the individual team.

“We’re going to give (participants) the stops and they have to decide the route,” she said. “That’s part of the strategy.”

Race Guidelines

• Each team must stay together and go to the locations together

• Each team must be in the same car

• There is no particular route teams must take to get to locations

• There is no order of locations that teams must follow

• The driving time of the race will not affect the team score

• Each team must go to the main locations in order to be scored

• Bonus locations are optional, but still worth points

• Scorecard must be signed off on at each location by the task administrator

• Scores will be recorded as a team score
