Youth volunteers all-important to Perry County Humane Society

Perry County Humane Society is a no-kill, nonprofit shelter that operates solely on volunteers and donations from the community. Donations consist of food, cleaning supplies, building repairs, money and time.

Volunteers take time out of their busy schedules to come out at least once a week to take care of the dogs and cats. Their activities include feeding and watering, medicating and, most importantly, playing.

Right now there are 21 volunteers; 10 adults and 11 young adults. Any volunteer will tell you it's a tiring job but an extremely rewarding job. Many times you hear people say "I couldn't do it. I'd bring home all the animals."

But, if you love animals and want to help them, you can do it. Try to keep in mind that volunteers do not have room in their homes for all of them. The shelter helps to keep them safe and loved. The goal for each animal is to find them their forever, loving home.

The shelter is having largest fundraiser of the year Nov. 16 at the Du Quoin Youth Club.

It's a soup and BBQ dinner that starts at 5 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and a small live auction at 6:30 p.m. There are four Disney Park Hopper Passes to auctioned. Mark you calendars and plan to attend.
