Profits from 80th anniversary Alongi's Since 1933 ornament to benefit Coats for Kids project

The 80th anniversary celebration at Alongi's Since 1933 Restaurant in Du Quoin began with the sale of half-price carryout pizza on Sundays and continues with the release of a beautiful had-painted commemorative ornament by Hestia Creations of Marblehead, Md.

The artist's proof of the ornament arrived last week and the full order should arrive in the coming days.

It is expected to be as much a collectible as the Maid Rite ornament years ago, which was part of the Du Quoin Tourism Commission series.

For many, the restaurant and its fine dining have held great memories as a local landmark.

The restaurant's 542-2468 telephone number was the first that many early residents learned to remember

John Alongi Sr. said the ornament will sell for $19.33 and will be available in two-to-three weeks.

All of the proceeds from the sale are being donated to the Du Quoin elementary school's "Coats for Kids" program, which donates dozens of winter jackets and coats to children each year.
