Breast Cancer by the Numbers: Marshall Browning Hosts 'Second Act' Program

Marshall Browning Hospital recently hosted a breast cancer program in coordination with the SIH Second Act Program in the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church in Du Quoin. Participants enjoyed a delicious meal and giveaways.

Dr. Marsha Ryan, Surgeon, discussed the importance of digital mammography in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and held an informal question and answer session with participants on the latest research on breast cancer including the role of genetics and what can be expected after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Christina Deering, mammography technologist at Marshall Browning Hospital, also discussed the new state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment now available at the hospital and explained that all mammograms performed at Marshall Browning Hospital would be interpreted by radiologists who specialize in breast studies at the SIH Breast Center.

Participants were informed that in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month discounted mammograms would be available at Marshall Browning Hospital for just $110 during the month of October and that convenient hours would be available for working women to schedule their mammogram.

The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman's death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.
