Hunger knows no season; Du Quoin sophomore hopes to fill food pantry shelves during the summer

A Du Quoin High School sophomore says it is ridiculous to think that people are only hungry during the holidays and that a bad economy is seasonal.

This summer, Carlie Daffron is setting out to do something about it and along the way hopes to earn the highest award in girl scouting--the national "Gold Award."

"I have been in girl scouts for the past 11 years and this year I am working hard to obtain my "Gold Award" which is the highest award issued to a girl scout. To obtain this award, I must complete an 80-hour project," says Carlie. "My project is called "Stocking the Shelves This Summer."

Carlie explains that this will be a three-phase project.

"Phase I was to provide Easter Sunday meals to shut-ins and people in need. With the help of churches and private donations I was able to provide 30 meals and it was simply wonderful," Carlie said.

"Phase II and III is where I need your experience, Mr. Croessman. I was wondering if you could get the word out for me," Carlie continues.

"Phase II is a citywide food drive to be held May 3, 2014. We will be placing bags on doors, then we will pick them up the following Saturday, May 10. Anyone interested in helping on both dates should just show up at Keyes Park at 9 a.m. o May 3," she says.

"Phase III is a food drive in all three schools. The class from both elementary and middle school side that has the most cans will be treated to a "doughnut and milk" party," she said.

"Anyone wishing to help donate to my project, I am in need of Wal-Mart gift cards to help fund both of these projects. Donations can be dropped off at 210 East Main Street," she said.

"Thank you so much for helping me out. It is greatly appreciated."

The Du Quoin Food Pantry serves over 400 Perry County families each month.

The Du Quoin Food Pantry exists to serve as a focal point for churches, community organizations and individuals to provide food aid to families in need. It is located at 314 North Maple Street and is open from 09:00 a.m. to Noon and from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. every Thursday. Donations can be delivered during these times as well. Phone (618) 571-2527.
